For almost a lifetime now we’ve been told to cut down on our consumption of fats. 0% Fat is huge business and most of us now choose Low Fat or No Fat. The only problem is, that we’ve unknowingly created, is the substitution of Fat for Sugar. Low Fat or No Fat products have an enormous amount of sugar to compensate for the lack of Fat and the intention of the producer to make their food product palatable and similar in texture to the Full Fat variety.

Let’s face the facts. Quitting Sugar is tough. It will take about 2 months before you are Scot-free. Most psychologists estimate between 21-66 days to change a habit and a similar amount of time on a physical level. You will go through a detox period where you feel crap! This was 3-7 days for me. For some this can last for up to 6 weeks. I’ve done it a few times and it’s best to be away from your own house and habits and further away from cafes and bakeries!! At least for the first week.

It’s important to go Cold Turkey which means no sugar, no fruit, no fruit juice and no agave or honey. The experts agree it’s far better to break the addiction first than re calibrate afterwards. Physiologically, Sugar by-passes the hypothalamus in our brains which tells us we’ve eaten and we are full. Sugar goes straight to the liver to cause havoc. Fat and Proteins on the other hand tell us when we’re full and curb any cravings. No wonder I can eat that full tub of 0% Fat yoghurt and I have trouble getting through half of the Full Fat variety!!
The solution is simple: EAT FAT and Some PROTEIN. Once the sugar is gone replace it with wholesome, unprocessed fats like eggs, cheese and nuts. Remove biscuits from the cookie jar and replace them with nuts and seeds which will take care of that afternoon ‘treat’ craving and in NO Way would you feel like you’re denying yourself.
