Skin: You might never be able to take it off, exchange it or buy an updated version. You’re stuck with it for a lifetime but you can definitely Choose to take better care of it. Here’s How!!

OK. Let’s get past the first and foremost hurdle which on our parts we cannot change. I’ll give it to you straight: Your genes play a large part in how your skin reacts to sun, wind, how quickly it heals itself and how well it ages. Our genes are our blueprint and it’s always good practice to gather as much information from your family as you can. You never know when it might help you in the future.

I’d like to investigate 2 main culprits of failing health – sugar and fats.

The skin is our largest organ and what we choose shows on the outside. Cooking Pot the iPhone App is a handy tool which provides Quick and Easy to make recipes that are Wholesome and Nutritious and feed us with Real Food.

Now let’s investigate the things we can do to help our skin.

  1. How we choose to Eat

It’s important to eat as many fresh and nutritious raw vegetables and nuts. Artichoke, Avocado, beetroot, kale, legumes, red grapes are of particular benefit with high levels of antioxidants, non-inflammatory and cleansing properties to help rid our bodies of toxins and free-radicals which cause most of the damage inside and out. Following an alkaline lifestyle high in pesticide free raw vegetables is very important. That means no processed foods and no sugars. A lot of the processed foods have high amounts of sugar and bad fats. By Sugar I mean all white flour baked goods and sugar such as white sugar, icing sugar, raw sugar, brown sugar. Please read the labels and you’ll be surprised at the amount of sugars present in food! Fructose from corn syrup is one of the most harmful but eating fruit provides enough fibre to process the sugar.

a) Fructose does not go through the Hypothalamus that tells your brain that you’ve eaten something and you might want to stop eating because you’re full. Instead, it by-passes even your stomach and goes straight for the liver working it very hard. We’ll stop there before I get carried away.

b) If the fats we consume are not medium-chain saturated fatty acids they become free-radicals once they react. This is usually achieved through heating or cooking. Free-radicals then attack all cells in our body. I choose to cook with coconut oil which is a medium-chain saturated fatty acid. I have not altered anyone’s recipes on Cooking Pot the iPhone App but I have substituted cooking oils for coconut oil and have found no issues.

OK, so it all comes back to home-cooking and home-cooking from scratch and this is where Cooking Pot the iPhone App makes it so, so EASY!! It’s always on you, gives you a ready made Shopping List and helps you cook Healthy, Nutritious, Sustainable meals with easy to follow recipes when you’re on the go!! How easy is That?

1. Banana Mash: Bananas are not only delicious but can be used as a facial mask. Choose the ones with black spots (anti-carcinogenic). Spread evenly onto your face and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse.

2. Coconut Spa: I was once told to keep a jar of coconut oil in the kitchen, in the bathroom and in the bedroom. We spoke about the kitchen. In the bathroom once out of the shower massage coconut oil into skin including face while still warm and wet. You will hardly need a towel afterwards. The coconut oil locks the water in and leaves skin feeling silky and smooth. This is a great wrinkle treatment and doesn’t leave you greasy!!

Your Skin … Your Choice?

Bush Flowers

Bush Flowers

The Skin is our largest organ but we don’t always treat it as well as we should. Today we discuss a few tips inside and out to find a new glowing you!

Our skin, our largest organ takes the brunt and protects the rest of us. For most, when we were children it took a lot of bruising and scrapes and scratches followed by hormonal imbalances mostly in our teens. Now that we are older it may not heal as quickly or be as elastic but it still protects us from an ongoing chemical onslaught. A women’s skin absorbs on average about 2.5kg of creams and cosmetics each year. Then we have Chlorine and Fluoride in our water and then we need to account for all the chemicals and GMOs in our food.

No wonder we are drowning in a slurry of disease. Our bodies simply cannot process that sort of chemical onslaught. Our skin detoxes and expels whatever it can, mostly through rashes, outbreaks, sweat and odour. Some chemicals stay in our bodies usually stored in fat tissue and the build-up just increases. So what can we do to Help?

This is part of the reason behind creating Cooking Pot the iPhone App. The App shows you how EASY it is to eat Healthy, Wholesome, Sustainable food on a Budget and helps you help yourself. It’s Easy to Eat Well and stay Healthy and Cooking Pot shows you how it doesn’t have to take up a lot of your time. It’s a win-win and now I should be saying “take up the challenge” but instead I’m wondering how “convenience” can be termed a “challenge”?

Here are 3 considerations:

OK! The first one is easy to deal with. Creams and cosmetics are used everyday but can just as easily be substituted with natural formulas. You also need to ask yourself if you really need to wear That much. Yes society has conditioned us into thinking that women who don’t wear make-up are slobs and don’t take care of themselves. How about stepping somewhere in the middle and reducing cremes and make-up and substituting with organic formulas or learning to make some of your own?

You might think that’s easy for me to say, when I just sit behind a screen. Well I think I’m lucky enough for my skin to react to these chemical cocktails. If I can’t eat it I don’t put it on my skin and I don’t have a problem. If I choose to wear make-up etc I pay the price – outbreaks, itchiness, swelling and stinging. I usually save this for special occasions like weddings etc every few years which just helps me remember why I opted not to wear any.

The second is Water. We are made up of 70% water and that means we have to drink enough of it each day to flush out toxins and re-hydrate our skin. The quality of water we choose to drink and wash in now becomes very important. Chloride can be easily removed by a simple filter or by leaving it to stand for a few hours in open air. Fluoride removal on the other had is much more involved and requires reverse osmosis filtration and a storage tank to store the purified water. An under-sink filter needs 6 minutes and 4 litres of tap water to produce 1 litre of pure water. There are also filters that condense air particles to water. These are more expensive.

So the third way to improve the quality of our skin is food. Here we have the least bit of control unless we grow it ourselves and make sure the food we consume is nutrient-rich and free of chemicals. Sure, Cooking Pot the iPhone App helps with Quick and Easy food ideas with easy to follow recipes. It has a full-featured Shopping List to save Time and Money while shopping but no matter how delicious the recipes are, the nutrient content depends on the ingredients we choose, where they came from and how they were cultivated.

Your skin is your choice, what will you choose?
