2 ½ cups salted cashews, processed to flour

3 eggs

125g natural yoghurt

125g cottage cheese

1 ½ tsp baking soda

3 tsp chia seeds

3 tsp linseeds

¼ cup sunflower oil

  1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F.
  2. Starting with the dry, mix all ingredients together well.

It’s also a good idea to activate the pumpkin seeds by soaking them in pure water overnight or 7 hours. They are way better for your digestive system if they are. Here’s how it goes…

1/2 banana

1. Process all ingredients and drink within 10 minutes.

This is so Yummy. I would never have thought! It sure makes a great Breakfast or Lunch. There’s a lot of protein in there to build muscle but I guess I have a whole side of muscle to build up. Better go and get back to the exercise.

Let’s Face the FATS – SUGAR!!

Have you ever people watched? Some are big, others are athletic while others still are very thin. Have you noticed how they carry themselves or move and have you wondered what they may be snacking on? I wonder, what they look like on the INSIDE! There is a huge correlation between the Sugar and Fat in our food. What is it and what do we do about it and do we even choose to?

For almost a lifetime now we’ve been told to cut down on our consumption of fats. 0% Fat is huge business and most of us now choose Low Fat or No Fat. The only problem is, that we’ve unknowingly created, is the substitution of Fat for Sugar. Low Fat or No Fat products have an enormous amount of sugar to compensate for the lack of Fat and the intention of the producer to make their food product palatable and similar in texture to the Full Fat variety.

Let’s face the facts. Quitting Sugar is tough. It will take about 2 months before you are Scot-free. Most psychologists estimate between 21-66 days to change a habit and a similar amount of time on a physical level. You will go through a detox period where you feel crap! This was 3-7 days for me. For some this can last for up to 6 weeks. I’ve done it a few times and it’s best to be away from your own house and habits and further away from cafes and bakeries!! At least for the first week.

It’s important to go Cold Turkey which means no sugar, no fruit, no fruit juice and no agave or honey. The experts agree it’s far better to break the addiction first than re calibrate afterwards. Physiologically, Sugar by-passes the hypothalamus in our brains which tells us we’ve eaten and we are full. Sugar goes straight to the liver to cause havoc. Fat and Proteins on the other hand tell us when we’re full and curb any cravings. No wonder I can eat that full tub of 0% Fat yoghurt and I have trouble getting through half of the Full Fat variety!!

The solution is simple: EAT FAT and Some PROTEIN. Once the sugar is gone replace it with wholesome, unprocessed fats like eggs, cheese and nuts. Remove biscuits from the cookie jar and replace them with nuts and seeds which will take care of that afternoon ‘treat’ craving and in NO Way would you feel like you’re denying yourself.

Herbology: Blessing in Dis-guise…

2 Friends + 2 Remedies = Releif.

I’m not too sure about writing this down but it helped me and I was in serious pain. If this helps you or someone you know it will definitely make me smile. I still need to go see a professional but they usually can’t do much with so much pain, buising and imflammation. Today I make my appointment.

Something Happened. I’m not entirely sure what, but I woke 2 weeks ago with my lower back completely stiff and I began to grit my teeth in pain. In the afternoons I found hiding places and let the tears roll in silence. I know a little about yoga but it was too much for my back. All I could manage was lie on my back with my legs. It looked angry and felt swollen. It was hot to touch. Sleep was a luxury.

Turkish Breakfast

I needed help and fast. I don’t do bandaids so painkillers were out of the question but I took some anyway just to get to sleep. Then I felt sick and put up with the pain. Replacing one pain with another was an interesting experience in itself but not one to be continued.

One friend recommended using Ginger Powder sprinkled inside a handkercheif dowsed with hot water and rung out keeping the ginger wrapped inside. This is achieved by rolling the handkerchief up and twisting each end in opposite directions to squeese the hot water out. Leave dry ends so you don’t burn your fingers!

Another friend suggested purchasing a Chinese Herbal Sports Liniment called Zheng Gu Shui which she used for muscle cramps, spasms and bruising when sparing in martial arts. Among other ingredients it contains arnica, cinnamon, camphor and menthol. These at least I know work!

The idea with both of these treatments is to create enough heat to treat the muscle. Ginger, cinnamon and arnica heal inflammation, bruising and help deal with shock. Camphor and menthol provide the heat.

I lay on my stomach. That took a while to begin with. The oinment was massaged into my whole back and then the hankerchief was placed over my lower back ginger side down. I was covered by a towel to prevent messing my bed up followed by a doona and blankets. I took deep breathes in through my nose and out through my mouth. In yoga this helps remove toxins. It took about two minutes and my whole back was burning. It was so much more intense where the handkerchief was. I kept stretching and relaxing whist lying on my stomach and breathing deeply.

On the second and third night my middle and upper back which had been extremely stressed trying to hold up the rest of me crack all by itself. I found myself lying a lot flatter. I streched my hips on the 4th and 5th morning. The inflammation has gone down far enough and now, I can feel some things out of whack.

It’s time to book my appointment with a professional. I had a back injury last August and it’s a work in progress.

Right!! I’ve always wanted to write about herbs. You’ve probably heard it all before. The old folk remedy or new cure for something or other or just a pinch or this and a pinch of that to make an ordinary dish outstanding. Turmeric is one of my favourites and one that I use all the time. I put it in my rice!

Turmeric presents itself as a root vegetable and is relative of ginger. It’s mostly grown in India and Asia and has been used in those areas as a powerful non-inflammatory. It is also know for it’s anti-oxidant properties and has been used to treat skin infections to cancer. Medical studies have not been able to confirm the medicinal value of turmeric but various studies have been undertaken and anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties have been confirmed.

What is a curry without turmeric? It’s subtle flavour and colour give us a tasty dish that we all know and I’m sure there is a curry out there for everyone! Turmeric is also know to aid cholesterol absorption by decreasing harmful levels of the stuff and aid in skin repair by hindering the aging process. It’s anti-oxidant properties or it’s ability to fight free-radicals may most probably be an attributing factor in slowing that aging process. These may be old folk remedies but there may be something in it. I don’t know. Post your comments.

What I do know is that rice has never tasted better without the addition of turmeric. It’s subtle bitter flavour is a winner at my place. Turmeric is also added to curries to give it that distinct colour. As a matter of fact, it is also added to mustard, butter and cheese for that same reason.

My favourite curry is a simple Tatka Dhal. It’s Vegan and bursting with flavour and loads and loads of fresh tomatoes. It doesn’t have to go on rice it tastes just as good on pancakes, in a pitta pocket for lunch or the following day all by itself! Scrumptious Pumpkin WHAT??

Cooking Pot may be a fantasic iPhone App with many handy features such as an interactive Shopping List, choose recipes by Ingredient, Intolerance, Allergy and Lifestyle filter and a few other handy extras but Cooking Pot, has, formost the most amazing collection of Recipes! Scrumptious Pumpkin Pie – find the recipe on Cooking Pot the iPhone App

Scrumptious Pumpkin Pie


600g pumpkin, boiled, mashed and cooled

180g cottage cheese

2 large eggs

¼ cup maple syrup – optional (a must for the sweet tooth)

1 tsp cinnamon

sprinkle nutmeg

1 ½ cup dessicated coconut

½ cup medjool dates, seeds removed

1 Tbsp coconut oil (may need a little extra)

2 Tbsp maple syrup

pepitas to garnish

  1. Crust: Process coconut, dates, oil and maple syrup until sticky. Press into pie dish or baking tray of choice.
  2. Filling: Combine first 6 ingredients in a large bowl.
  3. Pour Pie filling into crust, garnish with pepitas and cinnamon and bake in a moderate oven for 30 minutes. (180C/350F)

This Scrumptious Pumkin Pie can be served heated with natural yoghurt, cream or ice-cream or just on it’s own.

The maple syrup is very optional and I would recommend using half. I find the ¼ cup quite sweet and using none makes it almost too healthy! None tastes good just the same though. Now I’m wondering if I should be writing that… It’s a cake right? If it’s eaten as a meal than definitely skip the maple syrup. I have eaten my great grandmother’s (passed down recipe) cheese cake for breakfast which contains 10 eggs!! I still wonder about it’s cake-ness and as a-matter-of-fact the cake-ness of our Scrumptious Pumpkin Pie!
